隨著陸續出爐的文獻及醫療專家經驗報告，自體脂肪隆乳也受到愈來愈多的重視及討論。美國整形外科醫學會（ ASPS）也於 2007年組織了一個專案小組（ Fat Graft Task Force），針對自體脂肪隆乳的適應症、可能的併發症、相關技術的安全性與可行性、及未來的研究方向作進一步的評估；他們整合查詢到有關自體脂肪隆乳的 110篇文獻報告，在 283個胸部自體脂肪隆乳移植的案例中，術後追蹤從一個月到 10年；適應症包括先天胸部乳房發育不全及不對稱、隆乳術後莢膜攣縮、乳癌切除術後重建的案例及放射治療造成的組織病變等。在這些的個案，大部分在外觀的改善都得到滿意的結果。併發症包括感染 (1.1 %)、鈣化 (4.9 %)、脂肪壞死 (5.7%) 及硬塊 (1.1 %)；另有兩例在術後發現乳癌，但移植的脂肪並不影響其診斷。
經由文獻整理及彙整專家的意見，這個專案小組於去年提出一份自體脂肪隆乳移植建議準則（ ASPS guiding principles），其結論包括：
1.對於隆乳及改善其他胸部乳房的異常缺失，自體脂肪隆乳移植是可以考慮的安全選項之一；然而因醫療專家的經驗及技術的差異，結果可能會有不同，包括脂肪移植存活的時效性、可能需要多次動手術，及移植的脂肪可能因體重的變化而有波動等等。
2.可能的併發症包括感染、鈣化、脂肪壞死及硬塊囊腫，且現在仍無充分的證據來支持自體脂肪隆乳的安全性及有效性；對此，病患接受動手術前，醫療專家必須充分告知。
3.現在仍無充分的證據顯示自體脂肪隆乳是否會干擾乳癌的診斷，但對於乳癌可能發生的高危險群（包括本身或家族有乳癌的病史、或帶有乳癌的腫瘤標記 BRCA-1, BRCA-2），若欲接受自體脂肪隆乳則必須更為謹慎。
由這份建議準則看來，自體脂肪隆乳不再被認為是一個不安全的動手術。雖文獻的報告多屬正向，但多數為個案或系列報告或專家的意見，仍缺乏進一步計畫性的研究報告及將來發生併發症的可能性。但整體而言，只要醫療專家動手術的方法正確，且對於安全性及可能的併發症有充分了解，術後輔以精密的儀器檢查及緊密的追蹤，自體脂肪隆乳仍不失為一個安全的選項，畢竟不須植入義乳袋且觸感自然還是它最大的優點。

幾年前整形外科醫學會曾去文衛生主管單位詢問自體脂肪隆乳的合法性，但一直沒有獲得正面的回應，自體脂肪隆乳也就一直處於妾身未明的地位；在學會上醫療專家們也不敢將自體脂肪隆乳搬上檯面。
鑒於美國整形外科醫學會（ ASPS）對自體脂肪隆乳態度的改變，台灣美容界外科醫學會在今年四月也針對自體脂肪隆乳舉辦了一場研討會，邀請包括衛生署醫事處周科長、北醫胸部乳房 MRI檢驗中心的黃主任及韓國脂肪隆乳經驗豐富的李喜永醫療專家，台大醫院也提出一例自體脂肪隆乳的案例分享。
針對自體脂肪隆乳的適法性，周科長雖未正面回應，但認為自體脂肪隆乳移植屬於常規動手術，自體脂肪隆乳注射於胸部乳房也不屬於負面表列的項目，且隨著儀器、技術的進步，原本對於自體脂肪隆乳可能干擾乳癌篩檢的疑慮已大幅降低，所以認為應該還是採取開放的態度；唯醫療專家須依本身的經驗，對於可能的風險與併發症充分告知民眾。而方興未艾的幹細胞隆乳，由於其未知的風險仍高，仍屬人體實驗規範的範疇，不宜貿然使用在人體。
